Dress Code

The most common dress code for Viennese Balls is Black tie– but White tie is allowed. The lady wears the same as for a white tie and the gentleman wears a black dinner jacket, black trousers, black shoes, a black bow tie, and a white wing-collar shirt.

If you are in possession of an official Gala Uniform it is also customary to wear it at a Black Tie or White Tie event.

Shoes are the most important component of the attire that you will wear at a Viennese Ball. Men's shoes should be black, simple, and well polished. Women should avoid overly high heels. The soles of the shoes should be leather, rather than rubber, because it will be much easier to perform the rapid turns that are required for the Viennese Waltz.

It is a common practice to bring a separate pair of dance shoes and slip into these before you step onto the dance floor. Because it is important that your dance shoes should be comfortable, you will want to make sure that you have already worn them before to avoid any possible discomfort.

The lady wears a formal floor-length dress. It is important that these dresses should not be to narrow at the bottom but a flowing style, as anything too tight or restrictive would make it difficult to dance. It should allow free movement. It is also very elegant for women to wear opera-length gloves.

It is customary that only the debutantes wear white dresses.

Black Tie only, no suits with ties shall be admitted.
